2022 UPDATE: THE "PROGRESSIVE CLASSICAL MUSIC" OF WIM MERTENS
By Raymond Benson
With the April 2022 release of Heroides by Flemish contemporary classical composer and musician, Wim Mertens, I decided to update a piece that appeared here on my blog in 2015, which, in turn, was a revisit of an article originally published in Progression Magazine in 1998.
It is still astonishing to me that such a prolific composer (over 70 releases on CD to date) is not so well known in the United States... I facetiously joke that I am "America's biggest Wim Mertens fan," for I never miss a new work by this wonderful artist. I was honored that Wim asked me to pen an essay for the booklet that was enclosed in his 2019 4-CD boxed set retrospective, Inescapable, which marked Wim's forty years of work.
The update appears below, beneath this reprinted original 2015 piece. --RB
